  1. Hi Emacyn,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey reading your blog from home in Canada. It's fun to read about the Seven Sisters of Matariki because, being in the northern hemisphere, we don't see the same stars as you do.

I'm so glad that you've chosen to participate in the Summer Learning Journey program this year. Good for you!

You've made a good effort at re-telling the story of the Seven Stars of Matariki. You haven't quite told the whole story though, have you? The myth or story ends with the explanation that the reason there are 7 stars in the sky is because 7 beautiful sisters were unkind to their husbands and were banished from their home. One of the gods, however, chose to allow them to shine in the sky.

Myths are wonderful ways of explaining life, aren't they? They're 'true' in their own way, but not 'factual'. They're powerful stories containing wisdom. Do you have another favourite story or myth that you like to read?

I'm doing lots of reading these days as it's winter time in Canada and the days are very cold. The temperature outside today is -20 C. That means that we can only go outdoors for short periods of time, to walk or go sliding or skate. I take my dog, Spirit, on several short walks and I have to bundle up in lots of clothing each time. Is that hard for you to imagine?

I hope you're enjoying this program and also enjoying lots of fun in the sun on your summer holiday!! Keep up your great work!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
